The Hunger Site was the one that started it all. The site was
began back in 1999 by John Breen, a computer programmer.
"My original idea was to supply educational materials,
pencils, paper, books, to children in developing
countries," Breen says. "Then I found out that
hunger was a major factor in preventing students from being
able to learn, so I shifted the focus of the site." The
rest is history!
There are
only 6000 tigers left in the world
Rainforests
cover only 7% of the planet, yet they contain more than half of the
world's estimated 10 million species of plants, animals and insects!
The density of species is so great that One hectare (2.47 acres) may
contain over 750 types of trees, and 1500 other varieties of plants.
It
has been estimated that every 3.6 seconds someone around the world dies
from hunger. In fact since January 1st 2000 over 17,000,000 people have
fallen victim to this slow, painful form of death... more
1,220,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year...

HIV,
Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is one of the most rapidly spreading
virus in the world. Already, over 31.6 million people have been
infected with the virus. The virus by itself isn’t harmful, but
it weakens the immune system by attacking certain white blood cells of
its host so that they become susceptible to infections.
It costs $3 - $30 to purchase an Anti-personnel Landmine. To remove a single mine could cost as much as $1000.
Each year, 26,000 people are killed or mutilated by landmines
of which 8,000 are children.
The
total number of people in the world 15 years and over who are
illiterate was over 885 million in 1995. This figure representated 22.6
percent of the worldwide population, or more than one in five people.
Almost
100 billion pounds of safe, edible food – meat and poultry, fruit
and vegetables, milk and eggs – are thrown away every year by
retailers, restaurants, and farmers while twenty-five million Americans
are hungry, including 12 million children?
